Anna Martini Gli abitanti di una cittadina canadese che si chiama Kenora ricevono ogni anno a Natale la visita di Carrot (Carota), un adorabile cervo conosciuto da tutti. Ma quest’anno, il cervo si è presentato con una freccia conficcata nella testa.
Lee-Anne Carver, una residente della zona, è quella che aveva dato il nome a Carota dopo averlo visto per la prima volta circa tre anni fa, quando era ancora un cerbiatto, accompagnato da un maschio che Lee-Anne ha chiamato Patata (Potato, in inglese). Carota fa visita ogni Natale, ma un giorno di quest’anno il marito di Lee-Anne è entrato in casa in lacrime dopo aver visto Carota con la freccia nella testa.

I thought I would share with you, a little of Carrot's visit today.I also thought I would explain some of the complications with that awful bolt in his head. I have been in contact with a CO from B.C. who has experience with removing bolts from a deer's head. He was awfully helpful. I have also had a local hunting business owner writing to me explaining the bolt in detail. As horrible as the injuury is, it may now be saving Carrot's life. Any attempt to remove it may cause severe bleeding (as the CTV National News article covered) or even nerve damage. It appears the bolt has cauterized teh wound. Cutting the bolt also comes with a whole set of problems. Carrot is not going to stand still for that and, even if he did, the bolt is made out of carbon and it will splinter and shard, and those splinters can easily cause infection in Carrot. His antlers are guarding the bolt perfectly so he won't be catching it on anything. He will avoid rubbing trees and sparring as is his playful behaviour with his other deer friends, but that's okay. He understands how to avoid pain. It is the current hope that given enough time, his wound will heal and, after his antlers drop, that arrow may easily slide out. There are no guarantees of course, and each day may bring a different perspective. We will continue to share Carrot's journey with you. Il povero animale era evidentemente caduto vittima di un cacciatore e, data l’angolazione con cui la freccia è penetrata nella testa di Carota, la persona che l’ha colpito doveva trovarsi ad una finestra o su un ponte. È incredibile che il cervo sia sopravvissuto.

Lee-Anne ha raccontato ai media della prima volta che vide Carota. Era un cerbiatto orfano accompagnato da un maschio, Patata. Spesso i cervi maschi si prendono cura dei cerbiatti rimasti orfani. “La personalità di Carrot è così unica che è impossibile confonderlo”, ha detto Lee-Anne, che è una fotografa naturalista.

La donna ha raccontato che, quel giorno, riusciva a malapena a capire il marito che provava a dirle di aver visto il cervo con una freccia conficcata nella testa. Quando Lee-Anne è andata a vedere, è rimasta sconvolta.

“Da quello che mi hanno riferito i cacciatori, si tratta di una freccia al carbonio, una freccia letale per la caccia. È probabilmente stata scoccata da una balestra”, ha proseguito la fotografa.

La freccia andava rimossa, ma Lee-Anne aveva paura che l’operazione avrebbe causato a Carota danni al cervello o una grave emorragia. Ma i dipendenti del Ministero delle Risorse Naturali e delle Foreste, dopo aver sedato il cervo e somministratigli degli antibiotici, sono riusciti con successo ad estrarre il dardo.
Lee-Anne ha aggiornato la pagina Facebook “Carrot the Magic Deer and the Orange Heart Club“, esprimendo tutta la sua felicità per la riuscita dell’operazione. Quando Carota ha provato a camminare, intontito dai farmaci, la donna ha voluto parlargli per rassicurarlo e fargli sentire che era al sicuro.

Secondo le leggi della città di Kenora e della città di Thunder Bay, scoccare dardi con una balestra nelle aree urbane è consentito, ma Lee-Anne ha descritto l’episodio di Carrot come un “atto di crudeltà verso gli animali”.
Da quando ha condiviso la storia di Carrot sui social, Lee-Anne ha ricevuto un’ondata di supporto da parte di persone da tutto il mondo.
